Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a more economical and feasible way to mitigate CO2 emissions in the near future compared to the renewable energy technology and the energy saving technology. The capture of CO2 is essential for both storing (CCS) and utilizing CO2 (CCUS). Oxy-combustion is a competitive technology to enable the capture of CO2 from coal based power plants, since the energy penalty and waste emissions are low. However, the thermal efficiency penalty related to CO2 capture is still as high as 10% points when oxy-combustion is applied.A common target is to limit the efficiency penalty to 6% points and process integration plays an essential role to achieve the target.
When oxy-combustion is applied, the energy penalty related to CO2 capture is mainly caused by the air separation unit (ASU) and the CO2 compression and purification unit (CPU). This study performs a comprehensive exergy analysis on an oxy-coal combustion process. A vapor recompression heat pump distillation scheme has been developed to substitute the traditional thermally coupled distillation scheme, resulting in a 5% reduction in energy consumption for cryogenic air separation. In addition, the compression heat from the ASU and the CPU are utilized by integrating with the steam cycle. The thermal efficiency penalty related to CO2 capture is thus reduced to around 7% points.
